For years, with its cabarets and casinos frequented by US film stars and gangsters, Cuba had a thriving fashion scene, influenced by the pre-revolutionary Art Deco elegance, which translated in sequined statement pieces, refined Panama hats and premium hand-made cigars.
Durante años, con sus cabarets y casinos frecuentados por los actores de cine de Estados Unidos y por los mafiosos, Cuba mantuvo un escenario de moda próspero, influenciado por la elegancia pre-revolucionaria Art Deco, que se tradujo en prendas clave hechas de lentejuelas, refinados sombreros de Panamá y los habanos premium hechos a mano.
However, the communist principles that ruled in Cuba after Fidel Castro won power in the 1959 revolution insisted on equality, even in clothing. Foreign brands were not available, and Cubans had to wear imported second-hand clothes from State run stores. Authorities called it “recycled clothing” but ordinary Cubans referred to their trips to the official shops as “rag-shopping”. Cuba entered a crisis after the Soviet Union fell in 1991, as it had financially supported its communist government.
The end of the Soviet era encouraged a rebirth in Cuban fashion, and the historic change ocurring in a country which had been officially dedicated to social equality and the rejection of material wealth has become an important factor to inspire 2017 collections by Chanel, Proenza Schouler, Stella McCartney, and important magazine editorials.

Sin embargo, los principios comunistas que gobernaron en Cuba después de que Fidel Castro llegó al poder en la revolución de 1959 insistían en la igualdad, incluso en la vestimenta. Las marcas extranjeras no estaban disponibles, y los cubanos tenían que usar ropa de segunda mano importadas de las tiendas estatales. Cuba entró en una crisis después de que la Unión Soviética cayera en 1991, ya que había apoyado económicamente a su gobierno comunista.
El fin de la era soviética alentó un renacimiento en la moda cubana, y el cambio histórico ocurriendo en un país que había sido dedicado oficialmente a la igualdad social y el rechazo de la riqueza material se ha convertido en un factor importante para inspirar las colecciones para el 2017 de Chanel, Proenza Schouler, Stella McCartney, e importantes editoriales de revistas.
